Make cold-brew coffee every day!
Cold brew coffee:
- Is easy to brew daily
- Produces objectively better tasting coffee that's far less acidic
- Does not have to be served cold! (it's not iced coffee)
- Does not have to be brewed a gallon at a time in a topsy-turvy open vat containing a swamp of coffee grounds
- Saves time and energy compared to dripping, percolating, french pressing, whatever weird way you make hot coffee
Cold brew coffee tips:
- You must coarse grind your coffee beans. (do not ask me about a close relative who uses pre-ground Café Bustelo espresso grind in their french press every time we visit)
- Don't waste time and money seeking and purchasing pre-ground coarse-grind coffee, unless wherever you buy it grinds it for you. It will otherwise be hard to find and overpriced.
- I recommend a tall carafe style brewer with a built-in cylindrical filter. This saves space in the fridge, and you won't be serving from it.
- Get a funnel and a couple tall bottles with attached stoppers.
- Get an electric burr grinder with adjustable grind. (I gave myself tennis-elbow using a manual grinder before I switched)
- Depending on your cold-brew brewer, you may need another wide funnel to more conveniently add the grounds.
- You don't need to use the silly swivel mixer spinner thing that comes with my recommended cold-brew brewer
- I'm sure there are more tips.
How I brew cold-brew coffee every day:
-
Phase 1
- Grind beans for 15 seconds at coarseness setting 11
- Transfer grounds to the brewer using a wide canning funnel
- Slowly fill carafe with warm water, being sure to soak all the grounds
- Stir with a chopstick if grounds don't seem completely immersed
- Plop the brewer into the fridge for 12-24 hours (or longer)
- Enjoy the rest of your day while looking forward to the next morning.
-
Phase 2
- Wake up
- Remove the filter from the cold-brew carafe
- Transfer coffee via standard funnel to your tall bottle with attached stopper
- Discard of grounds and clean cold-brew brewer carafe+parts
- Pour mug of chilled cold-brew or nuke a mug of it for anyone who likes it hot.
- Enjoy it immediately or after Phase 1
- GOTO Phase 1
